Working Recognition of Foreign Professional Qualifications

Do you have a professional qualification from abroad? Then you should apply for its recognition in Germany.

Recognition of Foreign Professional Qualifications - Hamburg Welcome Portal

Recognition of foreign professional qualifications means the confirmation that a qualification obtained abroad is equivalent to a German professional qualification. The evaluation process is precisely and objectively regulated by law.

A recognised qualification may be helpful when searching for a job and can increase your chances in the labour market. In some cases it is even a prerequisite for being allowed to exercise the respective occupation in Germany at all.

Whether a recognition of professional qualifications is mandatory or not depends on whether your learnt profession is classified as a regulated profession or a non-regulated profession.

Regulated Professions

The recognition of professional qualifications is imperative in order to obtain access to regulated professions. Without recognition of your professional degree gained abroad, you are not allowed to pursue these professions in Germany.

A list of all professions which are regulated in Germany can be found in the Regulated Professions Database.

Non-regulated Professions

All so-called training occupations for which training in Germany takes place within the dual system are non-regulated professions. If you want to practise one of these occupations, recognition is not compulsory (but nevertheless possible in case you desire it). Hence, you may directly apply for jobs in the labour market and work in your profession.

A list of all dual training occupations in Germany is available in the PDF file “dual vocational training”.
