You can apply for a residence permit for job search, if you have a recognised university degree. The workplace must correspond to your degree.

If you have found a job during this period which corresponds to your degree, this residence permit can be changed into a residence permit for the purpose of employment.

You can apply for a residence permit for the purpose of job search at your relevant immigration authority or the Hamburg Welcome Center. They will give you more information about the application process.

Stay for job search after successful completion of your studies in Germany

If you have successfully completed your studies at a German university, your residence permit can be extended for up to 18 months for the search of an appropriate job. You can take any job during this period.

Requirements:

  • You must have completed a university degree (Bachelor, Master, Diploma, Masters etc.) in Germany.
  • The residence permit for job search can be granted only if it connects to a residence permit for the purpose of studying (according to § 16 section 1 AufenthG).
  • Proof of financing (720 Euro per month or 8,640 Euro for a year; or by presentation of a formal obligation)
  • Sufficient health insurance

Residence permit for job search for qualified specialists

If you have a German university degree, a recognised foreign university degree or a foreign university degree equivalent to a German degree, you can apply for a residence permit to find a suitable job for your qualification. The residence permit for job search for qualified specialists is valid for a maximum of six months and cannot be extended. You may not work with this residence permit.

Requirements:

  • Entry with a German visa for the purpose of job search - the German Mission Abroad in your home country is responsible for issuing visas.
  • Exception: Nationals of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand and the United States of America can enter without a visa.
  • Proof of a German university degree, a recognised foreign university degree or a foreign university degree equivalent to a German degree.
  • Proof of financing (720 Euro per month or 8,640 Euro for one year or presentation of a formal obligation)
  • Sufficient health insurance
