Kids & Family Daycare Voucher

In Hamburg, parents don’t have to pay for the five-hour care of their child in a daycare. The lunch for the child is free of charge. For this benefit, the parents only need to apply for a daycare voucher (Kita-Gutschein).

For a care of more than five hours, the parents have to pay a share of costs, the so-called parental contribution. This contribution is calculated individually and depends on income, family size and scope of care.

How to find a suitable daycare place for my child

Hamburg offers a wide range of childcare services in more than 1,000 daycare places. We recommend you to inquire about daycare centres one year before the daycare place is needed.

For example:

  • ask friends and relatives about their experiences with daycare centres and childminders
  • personal contact with a daycare centre of your choice
  • on the internet: (site in German language)

Use the Kita Database (Kita-Datenbank – site in German language) or Kita Map (Kita-Stadtplan – site in German language), where you can thoroughly study the offers and contact details of all Hamburg childcare centres and preschool classes. User guides for the Kita Database and Kita Map are available as PDF files below.

Once you have selected a suitable daycare institution, ask there, whether a place is free, and if necessary put your child’s name on the waiting list. At the latest six weeks before the requested date of the daycare, you should re-inquire whether your desired place in the child daycare or family daycare centre is available, so there is still time to respond to a possible cancellation.

If you cannot find a suitable place for your child, the employees of the children’s daycare department at your relevant local district office will help you.

How to get a daycare voucher (Kita-Gutschein)

Parents apply for a daycare voucher at their local district office. To find the relevant local district office, please enter the registered address of your child in the authority finder (Behördenfinder).

You will receive the daycare voucher by mail and can redeem it in every daycare centre that takes part in the daycare voucher (Kita-Gutschein) system.

Please note that you have to send your application three to six months prior to the start of the child daycare to the department of daycare of your local district office. Without a daycare voucher you have to pay for daycare yourself. The daycare voucher shall be valid for a maximum of one year and prolongation must be applied for at least three months prior to expiry.
