If you work for the first time in Germany, your employer will register you at a health insurance company or minijob central (Minijobzentrale). These facilities apply the social security number for you at the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Normally you’ll get your social security number within four weeks after this registration, by post.

A social security number consists of letters and numbers and is used for personal identification in the social security system. Your insurance number is on all correspondence of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Every person has only one social security number for a lifetime.

If you didn’t receive or lost your social security number, you can contact the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Please tell them your date of birth, place of birth, your birth name and the current postal address, and you will receive your insurance number by post. Alternatively, you can also contact your health insurance company.
