There are several immigration authorities in Hamburg. Here you can inform yourself about the institution in charge of your concern.

Please note:
For immigrants who still reside abroad, the competence lies with the respective German diplomatic mission abroad (embassy, consulate) in their home country.

Visa

Immigrants from abroad have to apply for a visa at their local German diplomatic mission.

The Hamburg Visa Center checks requirements for granting visas in case of intended long-term stays in Hamburg and issues statements to the German missions abroad. Here you can get general information on the visa issuing procedure (but no information on your application’s current status of processing).

Residence Documents

(Residence Permit, EU Blue Card, Settlement Permit, EU long-term Residence Permit)

For filing an application to obtain or renew a residence document, foreign nationals are asked to contact the immigration authority of the District Office responsible for their place of residence in Hamburg or the Hamburg Welcome Center (by prior appointment).

You can easily identify the District Office in charge of your application for a residence document (or its extension) online by using the Hamburg Administration Guide (Behördenfinder der Stadt Hamburg).

  1. Call up the Hamburg Administration Guide.
  2. Enter your registered address (street name and house number) in Hamburg.
  3. Press the red button (“Weiter”).

The Hamburg Administration Guide will now show you the relevant department’s contact details and opening hours.
