We are delighted that you have chosen Hamburg as the place to work and live at.

Apartment-Hunting - Hamburg Welcome Portal

We want to give you some advice about the ways finding suitable accommodation in Hamburg.

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has 7 districts: Hamburg-Mitte, Altona, Eimsbüttel, Hamburg-Nord, Wandsbek, Bergedorf und Harburg. Moreover the districts are divided in 104 quarters. For more information about the different quarters please visit the information site Hamburg Neighbourhoods.

The most common way to find suitable accommodation – for rent as well as for buying – is to read advertisements in newspapers or on the internet. The ads are published only in German. Also you can use the information paper “What do the abbreviations in ads for accommodation mean?” to translate abbreviations in ads for accommodations.

Moreover you have the possibility to find an accommodation online. By entering the terms "Wohnung", "Mieten" and "Hamburg" in an Internet search engine you will get an overview of the major real estate portals.

Housing cooperatives (Wohnungsbaugenossenschaften) publish their housing vacancies on their own internet sites. An overview of all the housing cooperatives in Hamburg can be found on http://wohnungsbaugenossenschaften-hh.de → Über uns → Stadtteile (available in German only)

How do housing cooperatives work?

  • If you want to rent an apartment from a housing cooperative, you need to be a member.
  • For becoming a member of a housing cooperative, you have to buy some cooperative shares.
  • The amount of cooperative shares ranges from flat to flat and depends on the apartment’s size.

Furthermore you can hire a real estate agent who helps you to find an accommodation. Please note that you have to pay for this service. It’s normally up to 2.38 of the “Netto-Kaltmiete”. The information paper “Rental cost scheme” gives you an overview about all the cost for an accommodation in Germany and the meaning of the term “Netto-Kaltmiete”. A list of all real estate agents is available online at Immobilienmakler Hamburg (site in German language).
