Kids & Family How to Find a Daycare Place

We recommend you to inquire about daycare centres 1 year before the daycare place is needed.

Hamburg Welcome Portal English – Kids & Family – Child Daycare – Types of Child Daycare

For example:

  • ask friends and relatives about their experiences with daycare centres and childminders
  • personal contact with a daycare centre of your choice
  • on the internet: (site in German language)

Use the Kita Database (Kita-Datenbank – site in German language) or Kita Map (Kita-Stadtplan – site in German language), where you can thorougly study the offers and contact details of all Hamburg childcare centres and preschool classes. User guides for the Kita Database and Kita Map are available als PDF files below.

Once you have selected a suitable daycare institution, ask there, whether a place is free, and if necessary put your child’s name on the waiting list. At the latest six weeks before the requested date of the daycare, you should re-inquire whether your desired place in the child daycare or family daycare centre is available, so there is still time to respond to a possible cancellation.

Keep in mind to apply for a Daycare Voucher (Kita-Gutschein) from your local district office three to six months before the daycare visit. Otherwise you must pay the costs of this Kita care yourself. Get more information on the Kita Voucher.

If you do not find a suitable place for your child, the employees of the children’s daycare department in your local district office will provide assistance.

We wish you the best of luck in finding a good daycare place for your child.
