Who Gets Parental Allowance?

To receive parental allowance you must fulfil the following conditions:

  • You look after and raise your child after the birth yourself.
  • You live with your child in one household.
  • You do not work for more than 30 hours a week.
  • You are resident in Germany.
  • In the last calendar year before the birth of your child, you have – as a single parent – earned a taxable income of less than EUR 250,000. For jointly eligible parents, the income limit is increased to less than EUR 500,000.

Citizens of EU/EEA Member States and Switzerland are also entitled to parental allowance if they are gainfully employed in Germany or live in Germany.

Other foreigners are entitled to parental allowance if they have a permanent residence permit or a residence permit with permission to work.

How Much Parental Allowance Will I Receive? And How Long Can I Receive it?

For births until 30.06.2015

The amount of parental allowance (basic parental allowance) depends on the income of the parents before the child's birth. It usually compensates 67 percent of the lost net income. The parental allowance is at least EUR 300 and a maximum of EUR 1,800.

The basic parental allowance can be received in the first 14 months of life of the child. A parent can get a maximum of twelve months parental allowance. Two months are added, if the partner also applies for parental allowance for at least two months and has experienced an income reduction for at least two months throughout the whole period.

For births from 01.07.2015 onwards

In addition to the parental allowance in its present form, there is another version, the parental allowance plus (Elterngeld Plus). The parental allowance plus is designed as flexible support for parents who work during parental benefit in part-time. Parental allowance plus compensates the income loss attributable to the reduced work time.

Parental allowance plus is available for a doubled period: one previous parental allowance month = two parental allowance plus months. Part-time working parents can take better advantage of their parental allowance budget. In addition, the parental allowance plus extends the parental allowance beyond the 14th month of the child.
